Nubians have a higher percentage of components than other breeds, and when you do a cost analysis on Nubians versus other dairy breeds, they eat less for the total volume of butterfat and protein they produce. In other words, they are more efficient than other breeds IF you are being paid on components and not volume. If your components are capped, you may want to milk both Nubians and a lower butterfat breed, particularly in the winter months. Most Nubians will milk a lot less volume in the winter, but the volume of butterfat and protein make up for it (many of our does test at above 6.5% butterfat and 4.5% protein in the winter). An added bonus to Nubians is they seem to live longer than other dairy breeds in a commercial dairy farm setting. | Herd management made easy!
